In war, there are stories
of soldiers who stay on after their army have retreated. They continue
fighting the good fight, long after the generals have forgotten them.
They do it for the love of the battle.
You hear these stories in rock and roll too. Out of the glare of the spotlight,
away from the generals, Ben Birchall and the Corrections kept fighting
the battle, and have emerged with the finely crafted debut album, 'Last
Ditch Brigade'.
Since 2004's 'Year Of The Monkey' E.P., and radio hit 'Three Minute Revolution',
things appeared all quiet on the Corrections front. But behind the lines,
things were firing. Tours with Motor Ace and the Pictures changed the
Corrections from a loose studio project into a razor-sharp backing band
in the style of the Attractions or
the Heartbreakers. And Birchall was writing some of the best songs of
his career.
So they checked into the studio. Recorded over 18 months with producer
Matt Maddock (Dan Kelly, Something For Kate) in whatever studio they could
get their hands on, Last Ditch Brigade features spiky rock (Surprise,
Surprise, Razor Smile),world-weary love songs (Corazon, My Dear) and stomping
dirty blues (Holding Out For A Better Hand). Occasionally recalling ben's
heroes Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon.
Its the sound of a band having one last roll of the dice, and throwing
a seven.
